How To Use DVD Shrink To Copy a DVD Movie

By R. Jerome Harris

DVD Shrink is a freeware DVD transcoder; and if you know what you are doing, you can make great copies of your DVDs just by using it in conjunction with DVD Decrypter.

DVD Shrink operates in two modes:

  1. Reauthor Mode: This is where the user can specifiy which DVD elements (Main Title, audio tracks and subtitles, and Special Features) to retain on the “shrunken or compressed” DVD; Menus are not selectable.

  2. Full Disk Mode: This allows the user to make a functionally identical backup copy without changes. Sections of the DVD, such as unwanted messages or logos/titles, can be replaced with still images, saving disk space for the Main Title. The compression can be Automatic or Manual, which allows selection of greatest compression for Menus or Special Features, saving disc space for the Main Title.

DVD Shrink is able to get around CSS copy protection, User operation prohibition (prohibiting skipping over previews or “FBI Warnings” and so on), and also allows the copy to be either made region-free, (the default setting) or set for any region code.

Once the DVD has been downsized, the resulting output is an ISO file or a DVD VIDEO_TS folder. It should be noted that the program cannot burn these images itself, as it does not contain a built-in burning engine. It can however pass the burning job to either Nero (version 7 or lower), ImgBurn (version 2.3.2.0 or lower which is free), or DVD Decrypter (also free) as long as these programs are installed. This process appears transparent to the end user. Alternatively, the resulting ISO file may be burned with any software capable of writing ISO files such as MagicISO.

The great thing about DVD Shrink is that it is free. You can download the latest version of DVD Shrink at here.

I have also created a video tutorial for you that will show you how to copy a DVD movie to a blank DVD. You will use DVD Shrink to encode the original DVD movie and create an ISO file; and you will use DVD Decrypter’s burn engine to burn the ISO file to a blank DVD.

Go ahead and download and install DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter and then view the video. It is really easy and you will be impressed with the quality of the copied DVD.

Enjoy!
