So you want a free solution to convert your DVD movies to AVI. Well, here it is! It’s called DVDx.

DVDx can convert DVD movies to AVI, MPEG1 (Video CD), or MPEG2 (Super Video CD).

I highy recommend that you download and install the Xvid Codec and/or the DivX Codec before you install DVDx. They will make your life much easier.
